Richard Stallman

- a Harvard alumni and a former employee of AI Lab at MIT, launched development of the
GNU operating system in 1984, and the Free Software Foundation in 1985. As part of developing GNU, he authored a number of well-known development tools, including the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC), the GNU symbolic debugger (GDB) and GNU Emacs .
